Your patient has a diabetic maculopathy

The need to refer depends upon the severity. Isolated microaneurysms do not need referral, but should be reassessed regularly by the optometrist. Patients with macular exudates or haemorrhages that are severe or close to the fovea should be referred soon via letter.
